Phoenix Mountain, called Heyang Mountain
in ancient time, is located at the junction of Gangkou, Fenghuang and Xizhang.
It extends from west to east, just like phoenix spreading its wings, and is
therefore known as Phoenix
Mountain. It covers an
area of thousands of acres, with the main peak 86 meters at height and
circumference of a circle 4 kilometers at length. On the hill lies large tracts
of lush and beautiful pine forests and bamboo groves; on the slope is acres of
peach and pear orchards where honey peach produced is well-known for its more
juice and sweetness. At the southern foot of the Mountain lies Yongqing Temple
that, built in the reign of Chiwu of the Kingdom of Wu
and with a history of over 1,700 years, was one of 480 temples in the Southern
Dynasties but was demolished after liberation. The southwest of the Mountain is
Zhe Mountain with an area of 400 acres; the
northwest of it are luxuriant trees and dense groves where famous phoenix honey
peaches are produced. At the foot of Zhe
Mountain grows a rare,
famous ormosia hosiei tree that, according to the legend, was planted by Xiao
Tong, the eldest son of Xiao Yan, Emperor Wu of Liang in the Southern
dynasties. And it, with a history of over 1500 years, is a wonder of Jiangnan.
On May 6th, 2000, ormosia hosiei tree suddenly bloomed and in October, had
about one hundred of brightly-red heart-shaped fruits. It has passed more than
30 years since the tree last flowered. The old records said. Phoenix Mountain
boasts gorgeous scenery. There are many places of interest, such as “ eight
views inside and outside”. The “eight views inside” include Three ponds, Four
wells, Old Sabina, Hollow Poplar, Xiu Peak, Li Spring, Chancellor Tomb,
Zhuangyuan Reading Stage. The “eight views outside” include Reading Sound along
the Lake, Fangji Wineshop, Fishing Song at the Port, Herd Song at Firewood
Field, Chirping at the Mulberry Bank, Fish in Lotus Pond, Sunset in Pine Woods
and Banner outside the House. With the passing of time, the majority of scenic
spots of “eight views inside and outside” has long disappeared, and only the Xiu Peak,
